俗话说：“秋夹伏，热得哭”。周兴和记得，这一年立秋过后仍十分炎热，当他走进成都市政府第一会议室时，里面满满坐着人，使整个会场的空气更加炽热。

1998年9月15日，四川省秸秆研讨会在这里召开。

这次会议名为研讨会，实则就是评审各竞标单位对秸秆综合利用的科研生产方案。参加这次会议的有省市县各级领导、相关部门上百个专家，共有400多人。在对入围预选8家单位中，最后又从8家单位中筛选出4家参加这次会议。

They should have a representative at this meeting."

参加会议的4家企业代表，规定每家代表发言20分钟。会议开始前，周兴和找到招标小组，希望能安排自己在前面发言，可由于说不清的原因，招标小组却专门把周兴和的发言排在了最后。

Representatives of the four companies attending the meeting were given 20 minutes for speech respectively. 发言的单位都专门安排了口齿伶俐、善于语言表达的人在大会介绍情况，他们个个在发言中都声情并茂，极具感染力和煽动性，赢得众位专家频频点头——该怎么来阐明自己的观点呢？周兴和一边在听着前面3家单位的情况介绍，一边在紧张思考着这个问题。看来，再按部就班重复前面几个人所讲的问题，只能让领导和专家们感到味同嚼蜡，再增加他们的听觉疲劳罢了。在第3家发言时，周兴和抬起手腕看了看表，已经快12点了，会场上的人已经有些不耐烦起来，有人已开始离席往外走了。

这时，周兴和想起《演讲与口才》书中介绍的两个案例：一个讲的是80年代初期，国内一个厂家研制了一种新产品，他们的情况和周兴和现在的情形差不多。别的企业发言时间有10分钟，而他们厂长发言时间只有5分钟，可这个精明厂长发言时却只用了3分钟。他自我介绍的最后一句话是：很抱歉，我这个人个子矮，为了让大家看得见我，我只好站着发言。他说，我们的产品今天就不给大家详细介绍了，晚上我们给大家安排了一场新电影，时间是6点半，大家工作很辛苦，就请大家看电影吧。当代表们6点半准时到场时，厂长上前对大家说：哎呀，我这个人真是个马大哈，连放电影的时间都稿错了。刚才他们才告诉我，放电影的准确时间是7点整，真对不起大家。这时他的员工在座位上却突然向他提问了：“刘厂长，下午你还没介绍你厂的产品，你们到底生产的是啥产品，能不能给我们讲讲？”这个厂长回答说：“我这个人不但个子矮小，而且做事总是粗心大意，看来是个不称职的领导。这样，离放电影还有半个小时，为了不让大家空坐无聊，我让工作人员给大家发点资料看看。”这样，这个厂研制的新产品一炮打响！

让周兴和记忆犹新的另一个案例是：当年的美国总统罗斯福，虽然他身体残疾，但他以自己超凡的智慧、能力和口才当选为总统。当他走上总统就职演讲台时，还没来得及讲话，台下一位议员为了羞辱他，说：“罗斯福总统，你看你父亲给我补的这双鞋，现在又穿烂了，你看怎么办？”罗斯福笑了笑，把自己的演讲稿放在一边，亲切地对这位议员说：“我非常感激这位议员先生，提到了我的父亲。是的，我父亲的确是个修鞋匠，我能有今天的成就，完全是他老人家怎么教我去做事，如何教我去做人。他老人家在替别人补鞋过程中，一针一线做得那么仔细，那么认真；有的人没有钱，他也免费为他补鞋，有钱的人去补鞋，他也从不多收人家一分钱——难免在他老人家死了5年后，他给人补的鞋有人穿破了，这没关系。子承父业，作为儿子，我愿意将我父亲补过而又穿烂了的鞋，亲手替我父亲将它补好再送给你们。亲爱的议员先生，请把你的鞋送上台来好吗？”可，那位为了羞辱罗斯福的议员，自己却领受了羞辱，无地自容，早已逃遁了。而罗斯福总统却再次在国民面前树立了自己宠辱不惊、随机应变的超强形象。
